Iola’s eight wonders selected

Votes for the eight wonders of Iola cast at the Iola Family Reading Festival on Dec. 17 have been tabulated.
Becky Nilges, reading festival chairman, turned results over to the Iola Area Chamber of Commerce, “which will take it from here” including advertising opportunities.
Voters’ choices were:
Art: Bowlus Fine Arts Center.
Commerce: Iola candy factories, Sifer’s, past, and Russell Stover Candies, present.
Cuisine: Renee’s Bakery.
Customs: Iola Municipal Band concerts, with ice cream socials and horn-honking as applause.
Geography: Neosho River.
History: old Iola Cemetery, with Civil War graves and monument, plus “Eleanor” outhouse.
People: Maj. Gen. Frederick Funston.
Architecture: area Works Progress Administration buildings, including structures in Riverside Park, North Community Building, rock wall around Walter Johnson Field in Humboldt, and many more.
